Are you still drinking toxic Fluroide?

 Important information on Fluoride from a report in Scientific American

 "Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland," reports Scientific American editors (January 2008). "Scientific attitudes toward fluoridation may be starting to shift," writes author Dan Fagin.

"Fluoride, the most consumed drug in the USA, is deliberately added to 2/3 of public water supplies theoretically to reduce tooth decay, but with no scientifically-valid evidence proving safety or effectiveness," says lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation.

Fagin, award-wining environmental reporter and Director of New York University's Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program, writes, "There is no universally accepted optimal level for daily intake of fluoride." Some researchers even wonder whether the 1 mg/L added into drinking water is too much, reports Fagin.

After 3 years of scrutinizing hundreds of studies, a National Research Council (NRC) committee "concluded that fluoride can subtly alter endocrine function, especially in the thyroid -- the gland that produces hormones regulating growth and metabolism," reports Fagin.

Fagin quotes John Doull, professor emeritus of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, who chaired the NRC committee thusly, "The thyroid changes do worry me."

Fluoride in foods, beverages, medicines and dental products can result in fluoride over-consumption, visible in young children as dental fluorosis -- white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted teeth. We can't normally see fluoride's effects to the rest of the body.

Reports Fagin, "a series of epidemiological studies in China have associated high fluoride exposures with lower IQ."

"(E)pidemiological studies and tests on lab animals suggest that high fluoride exposure increases the risk of bone fracture, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and diabetics," writes Fagin.

Fagin interviewed Steven Levy, director of the Iowa Fluoride Study which tracked about 700 Iowa children for sixteen years. Nine-year-old "Iowa children who lived in communities where the water was fluoridated were 50 percent more likely to have mild fluorosis... than [nine-year-old] children living in non-fluoridated areas of the state," writes Fagin. Levy will study fluoride's effects on their bones.

  • Now declassified files of the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Energy Commission shows that the original motivation for promoting fluoride and water fluoridation in the U.S. was to protect the bomb- and aluminum industries from liability
  • Originally, the fluoride used to fluoridate water supplies came from the aluminum and atomic bomb industries. A couple of years later, they switched to an even more hazardous waste product: hydrofluorosilicic acid from the phosphate fertilizer industry
  • This hydrofluorosilicic acid also typically contains arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury, plus a variety of other contaminants that are part of the phosphate ore, and, shockingly, it does not have to be refined or filtered prior to being shipped and dumped into municipal water supplies

What's for Breakfast?

Does that question fill you with dread? Feelings of guilt? Overwhelm?

When I first started learning about 'real foods' and what the 'fake foods' were doing to me, it did feel overwhelming. The good old staples I'd relied on for years, wheat cereals, corn cereals, granola, I was learning did not really help my body. In fact, some of these foods were causing inflammation and even setting me up for serious disease like diabetes which runs in my family.

So how do you get past the overwhelm, the confusion, the question "what should I eat?"
It is a process and please know that even baby steps will make a difference.  Actually making slow changes will probably work better because you will have time to adapt both physically and emotionally.

My job in working with you is to help you learn what you body really wants and needs. For example, a great breakfast for many people - especially those trying to lose weight - is my simple egg frittata with all natural bacon or turkey sausage.  This gives your body the protein, carbs, essential fats and other nutrients it needs to carry you through a long morning without crashing.  See the simple recipe below.  Remember, I'm here to help and it's not a race - it's a process so relax, breathe and enjoy every bite. 

Frittata for 2:
4 eggs scrambled with 1TBL Greek Yogurt or cream
1/3 cup sliced portabella mushrooms
1/2 cup frozen spinach ( I buy it in bags to use a little at a time)
2-3 sliced green onions
salt, pepper, other seasonings as desired
sprinkle of Parmesan cheese
2 tsp coconut or olive oil

Heat oil in oven proof skillet
Saute mushrooms and onions
Add spinach and seasonings, cover and simmer until spinach is thawed.
Add egg mixture and a pinch of salt/pepper
Cover again and cook on low until almost set.
Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and place under broiler until eggs are set and cheese is melted.

I like to serve this with a drizzle of hot sauce. It's also great with Guacamole, especially if you add fresh Cilantro to the eggs.

Natural Help for Seasonal Allergies

Natural Treatments: Dietary Friends and Foes

About one-third of seasonal allergy sufferers have something called "oral allergy syndrome," in which your immune system is triggered by proteins in some foods that are molecularly similar to pollen. Your immune system looks at the protein molecule and says, "Close enough!" and attacks it. If you are allergic to ragweed, for example, you may have cross-sensitivity to melons, bananas, tomatoes, zucchini, sunflower seeds, dandelions, chamomile, and echinacea. If you have a grass allergy, you may also react to peaches, celery, tomatoes, melons and oranges.
Besides avoiding foods that may trigger your allergy, there are a number of foods that can be helpful for calming down allergy symptoms.
Consider the following:
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: According to Mother Earth News, a German study published in the journal Allergy found people who have diets rich in of omega-3 fatty acids suffer from fewer allergy symptoms. A second study in Sweden found that children who regularly ate fish prior to age one had much lower allergies by age four. My favorite sources of omega-3 fatty acids are grass fed meat and eggs, and krill oil. (Fish has become too contaminated to rely on as a staple.)
  • Probiotics: In a 2008 study, researchers discovered that people who took probiotics throughout allergy season had lower levels of an antibody that triggered allergy symptoms. They also had higher levels of a different antibody (IgG), thought to play a protective role against allergic reactions. Other researchers found evidence that giving probiotics to newborns and mothers-to-be may help prevent childhood allergies.
  • Vitamin D: Insufficient vitamin D levels have been linked to more severe asthma and allergies in children. Vitamin D has also been found to reduce allergic responses to mold.
  • Hot peppers: Hot chili peppers, horseradish, and hot mustards work as natural decongestants. In fact, a nasal spray containing capsaicin (derived from hot peppers) significantly reduced nasal allergy symptoms in a 2009 study.
  • Locally produced honey: Many believe that consuming locally produced honey, which contains pollen spores picked up by the bees from your local plants, can act as a natural “allergy vaccine.” By introducing a small amount of allergen into your system (from eating the honey), your immune system is activated and over time can build up your natural immunity against it. Just be careful to consume honey moderately as it’s high in fructose.
Below are several other foods and herbs you might want to try:
  • Quercetin: Quercetin is an antioxidant that belongs to a class of water-soluble plant substances called flavonoids. Although research is sketchy, many believe quercetin-rich foods (such as apples, berries, red grapes, red onions, capers and black tea) prevent histamine release—so they are “natural antihistamines.” Quercetin is also available in supplement form—a typical dose for hay fever is between 200 and 400 mg per day.
  • Butterbur (Petasites hybridus): Another natural antihistamine, this herb has been used since ancient times to treat a variety of conditions, including migraines. In a German study, 40 percent of patients taking butterbur root extract were able to reduce their intake of traditional asthma medications. A British study found butterbur as effective as the drug Zyrtec.

    A word of caution is needed, however. Butterbur is a member of the ragweed family, so if you are allergic to ragweed, marigold, daisy, or chrysanthemum, you should not use butterbur. Also, the RAW herb should not be used because it contains substances called pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can be toxic to the liver and kidneys and may cause cancer. Commercial butterbur products have had a lot of these alkaloids removed.
  • Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica):  Another natural antihistamine, stinging nettle has a long history of use for seasonal allergies, without the drowsiness and dry mouth associated with many pharmacological antihistamines. Nettle inhibits your body’s ability to produce histamines. The recommended dose is about 300 mg freeze-dried nettle extract daily.
  • Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis): Goldenseal may be helpful for seasonal allergies. Laboratory studies suggest that berberine, the active ingredient in goldenseal, has antibacterial and immune-enhancing properties.
  • Eucalyptus oil: This pure essential oil can be healing to mucus membranes. You can apply a drop on a cotton ball and sniff it several times a day, add a few drops to water (or to a nebulizer, if you own one) for a steam treatment, or use a few drops in your bathwater.

Happy and Healthy 4th!

OK - so how can a Happy 4th of July celebration be Healthy and still feel like a celebration? Stay with me here - it really is possible.

We are seeing a huge trend recently away from the biggest health offenders (high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, over-processed foods, artificial sweeteners...) and toward more natural foods.
Think back to the days of the first Independence Celebration. I don't think they had diet cola, potato chips, dips full of chemicals or artificial whipped cream to top the dessert. But they DID have a great time with really yummy food.

Do you know how easy it is to make baked beans from scratch? The taste is so much better than canned, and you can be really creative while saving $$$.  If you have a crock pot, great, otherwise a big old pot on the stove works well. Buy your favorite brand of dried beans ( we like pinto, black or navy), rinse them in a colander and cover them with water and a little salt in a big pot. Bring to a boil, boil for 2 minutes, cover and take off the burner. Let sit for 2 hours while you have fun doing something else.

Then drain and rinse the beans, put back in the pot or crock pot. Add water to cover and your favorite seasonings ( I often use salt, pepper, cumin, onions, garlic, jalapenos, etc) but do not add tomatoes or tomato sauce until beans are finished as it will impair the cooking process. Simmer on low for a few hours. Check a few times to make sure water is not gone. Add tomato sauce, bbq sauce, sugar if desired near the end of cooking. You can also finish the beans in a big cast iron pan on the grill for a great, smoky flavor.

Serve with burgers made from grass fed beef on whole grain buns with a good organic cheese and tomatoes, iced tea or fresh lemonade, a big salad with home made dressing of cider vinegar, garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil.

For dessert, how about some berries from your local farmer's market with fresh cream you whip up yourself (it only takes a minute) or fresh icecream you and the kids make. FUN!

Protecting Yourself from Wireless Radiation

Common Sense Tips to Lower Your Risks

While the IARC panel, being a science not policy organization, did not make many specific recommendations to consumers, IARC Director Christopher Wild did take it upon himself to publically state:
"Given the potential consequences for public health of this classification and findings it is important that additional research be conducted into the long-term, heavy use of mobile phones. Pending the availability of such information, it is important to take pragmatic measures to reduce exposure such as hands-free devices or texting."
And, Jonathan Samet, leader of the IARC RF-Carcinogenicity working group, of University of Southern California, has said:
"The 2B designation was not limited to cell phones. It has "broad applicability" to all sources of RF radiation" according to Microwave News, something the general news media has not yet zeroed in on.
Keep in mind that completely eliminating exposure is close to impossible. Even if you don't use a cell phone and your home is wireless-free, you can be exposed to microwave radiation from your neighbor's wireless devices or while visiting "hot spots" or traveling near cell phone towers. That said, there's still plenty you can do to minimize your exposure and help safeguard your children's health:
  • Children Should Never Use Cell Phones: Barring a life-threatening emergency, children should not use a cell phone, or a wireless device of any type. Children are far more vulnerable to cell phone radiation than adults, because of their thinner skull bones, and still developing immune and neurological systems.
  • Reduce Your Cell Phone Use: Turn your cell phone off more often. Reserve it for emergencies or important matters. As long as your cell phone is on, it emits radiation intermittently, even when you are not actually making a call.

    Leave an outgoing message on your phone stating your cell phone policy so others know not to call you on it except in emergencies.
  • Use a Land Line at Home and at Work: Although more and more people are switching to using cell phones as their exclusive phone contact, it is a dangerous trend and you can choose to opt out of the madness.
  • Reduce or Eliminate Your Use of Other Wireless Devices: You would be wise to cut down your use of these devices. Just as with cell phones, it is important to ask yourself whether or not you really need to use them every single time.
If you must use a portable home phone, use the older kind that operates at 900 MHz. They are no safer during calls, but at least some of them do not broadcast constantly even when no call is being made. Note the only way to truly be sure if there is an exposure from your cordless phone is to measure with an electrosmog meter, and it must be one that goes up to the frequency of your portable phone (so old meters won't help much). As many portable phones are 5.8 Gigahertz, we recommend you look for RF meters that go up to 8 Gigahertz, the highest range now available in a meter suitable for consumers.
Alternatively you can be very careful with the base station placement as that causes the bulk of the problem since it transmits signals 24/7, even when you aren't talking. So if you can keep the base station at least three rooms away from where you spend most of your time, and especially your bedroom, it may not be as damaging to your health.
Ideally it would be helpful to turn off or disconnect your base station every night before you go to bed. Levels of microwave radiation from portable phones can be extraordinarily high, according to Camilla Rees.
"Portable phone radiation can be as high or higher than a wireless router, though most people would have no idea that this common device at their bedside could be harmful".
You can find RF meters at But you can pretty much be sure your portable phone is a problem if the technology is labeled DECT, or digitally enhanced cordless technology.
  • Limit Your Cell Phone Use to Where Reception is Good: The weaker the reception, the more power your phone must use to transmit, and the more power it uses, the more radiation it emits, and the deeper the dangerous radio waves penetrate into your body. Ideally, you should only use your phone with full bars and good reception.

    Also seek to avoid carrying your phone on your body as that merely maximizes any potential exposure. Ideally put it in your purse or carrying bag. Placing a cell phone in a shirt pocket over the heart is asking for trouble, as is placing it in a man's pocket if he seeks to preserve his fertility.
  • Don't Assume One Cell Phone is Safer than Another.There's no such thing as a "safe" cell phone, and do not rely on the SAR value to evaluate the safety of your phone. Always seek CDMA carriers over GSM as they have far lower radiation in their signaling technology. And remember, eliminating cell phone use, or greatly lowering cell phone use from phones of all kinds, is where true prevention begins.
  • Keep Your Cell Phone Away From Your Body When it is On: The most dangerous place to be, in terms of radiation exposure, is within about six inches of the emitting antenna. You do not want any part of your body within that area.
  • Respect Others Who are More Sensitive: Some people who have become sensitive can feel the effects of others' cell phones in the same room, even when it is on but not being used. If you are in a meeting, on public transportation, in a courtroom or other public places, such as a doctor's office, keep your cell phone turned off out of consideration for the 'second hand radiation' effects. Children are also more vulnerable, so please avoid using your cell phone near children.
  • Use Safer Headset Technology: Wired headsets will certainly allow you to keep the cell phone farther away from your body. However, if a wired headset is not well-shielded the wire itself acts as an antenna attracting ambient information carrying radio waves and transmitting radiation directly to your brain. Make sure that the wire used to transmit the signal to your ear is shielded.

    The best kind of headset to use is a combination shielded wire and air-tube headset. These operate like a stethoscope, transmitting the information to your head as an actual sound wave; although there are wires that still must be shielded, there is no wire that goes all the way up to your head.

Spring Rolls for Lunch

Here's a yummy way to have a healthy lunch without all the carbs. Spring Roll wrappers consist of rice flour, water and salt. Simply moisten the wrapper, fill it and wrap. It sticks to itself making a pretty secure package.

Mine is filled with lettuce, salmon, black olives and pickled asparagus. The dipping sauce is just mustard and hot sauce. Yum.

A Natural Approach to Treating Cancer

Your spice cabinet can help prevent breast cancer?

So how do you take this miracle spice? You can do as the Indians do and cook with it turning your food a beautiful deep yellow. You can also buy it in capsules and follow your herbalist's advice on how much to take. Anti-cancer doses are up to 3 grams three or four times a day.

To make curcumin more bio-available you can make a strong tea by boiling the powder for 5 minutes and drinking the cooled liquid. You can also blend the powder with melted coconut oil and eat it on rice, eggs or vegetables. It would mix well with cooked yellow squash or plain yogurt too.

Green "Go Pack" Salsa

Here's a fresh green salsa to add a little 'Kick' to your Super Bowl party tomorrow. Super easy, super quick and really delicious.

8 washed and quartered Tomatillos
1 medium onion peeled and quartered
2 Tbls minced garlic
1 large or 2 small washed and diced jalapenos  (seeded for less spicy)
1/2 cup washed cilantro leaves only
1 tsp salt
1 Tbl. ground cumin
2 Tbls Braggs Liquid Aminos (optional)
4 or 5 scallions diced

Put everything except the scallions in a blender or food processor and process until just slightly chunky. Add the scallions and serve.

Unhealthy Energy - How are you affected?

Losing Weight is Impossible If . . .

Losing weight is impossible if...
If you have your "danger foods" in the house.

I know the food gurus all say that there really is no "bad food"; however, I know that there are certain foods that draw me like a magnet if I'm tired or depressed or angry or bored or..... (fill in the blank).

The ONLY WAY that I can lose weight is to
* get those foods out of the house
* keep them out and
* find something healthy, delicious and easy to grab when I'm in a mood.

Then and only then will I be able to change my habits, end my cravings and lose that weight.

What are your "danger foods"? Usually it's something sweet or salty or both. So what are some substitute foods to get you started on the right path? Here are just a few suggestions. I'd love to hear from you if you've found some "happy" foods that work for you.

Sugar - the Good - the Bad and the Ugly

This time of year it's pretty hard to escape sugar. I have a fabulous box of homemade fudge on my kitchen counter that is calling to me all day long.  Then there are the endless cookies, breads, pastries, and pies that go along with the holiday season. So we indulge and we vow to be better come January 1st, but is it possible to avoid all sugar? Better question - should we avoid all sugar?
