I learned something today. Love when that happens. I was amazed to discover that Brown Fat is actually good fat! I thought it was the opposite. So wrong!
Brown fat - when it's activated - actually melts white fat. WOW! Scientists have discovered that we all have some brown fat - we were born with it. However some lucky people have more brown fat than others and they are usually the trim folks.
"Brown fat burns energy to generate heat. It is perhaps best known for keeping babies warm, but scientists have now realized that adults do retain active brown fat. We can be made to produce more brown fat through exposure to cold or activation of the sympathetic nervous system. The new study suggests a more engaging environment is another, perhaps more effective path to increasing brown fat."

Studies have been done with mice that seem to prove you can create more brown fat and thus lose more white fat by being socially active. In other words get off your butt and get out there - meet people, go shopping, go dancing, go to coffee shops, take classes, join groups. You get the idea.
Further study indicates that people with higher levels of brown fat are overall healthier. "(Researchers) found a direct correlation between the activation of brown adipose tissue and metabolic measures that indicate the presence or absence of good health," NIH researcher Francesco S. It's all in your head?
The wonderful American Monk, Burt Goldman, wrote the words below. We are only beginning to realize how powerful our minds are.
"If someone put a gun to your head and said, "Run a marathon in the next 24 hours or I'll shoot", what would you do?
You'd probably start running. And even though you may be unfit, you would complete that marathon. The human body is fully capable of it. You may not have record time, but you'd complete it.
Now here's the funny thing. AFTER completing that marathon, even if you chose not to exercise or eat different, your body would behave differently. You'll feel younger, more healthy, slimmer and leaner.
You see in our collective minds we have come to believe that anyone who can run a marathon is fitter, younger-looking, healthier and slimmer. Your body would actually take on those properties to abide by your believes about running a marathon. Your experience shifted your Inner Identity of WHO YOU ARE. Away from home and sick
(The following went out to our son away in college when he came down with the flu. Its miserable being sick anytime, but especially when you are away from home for the first time. As I wrote this I realized that others might benefit from some of the ideas here so I decided to share. Hope you have a healthy winter. )

I sure hope you are feeling better. We would really like to see you stay healthy and you have all the tools you need at your disposal.
- Sanitation - since many germs including the dreaded mono and hepatitis germs are spread via sharing drinks or dirty cups, you can use the microwave to sterilize containers (non metal of course) Just add some water to the container and process on high for 1 minute or just until the water boils. This is also a great way to disinfect wash cloths and sponges. Frequent hand and hand towel washing is essential too.
- Prevention - we have to get beyond the idea that nutrition doesn't matter and when you get sick is when you think about vitamins. Such a waste of time - being sick that is. You have Body Balance which has been proven to boost the immune system exponentially so you do not get sick or get a much milder illness. Add Vit D-3 and Vit C (they both work better when you combine them) and you will be almost unstoppable. You need to take enough though. If you have not taken D for a while - take 4-6 pills a day (20,000- 30.000IU). After a week or two, drop down to 3 pills a day. Take 1-2grams of VitC (one Vitali-C) daily and you should be good to go. We have put you on an autoship of 2 bottles of Body Balance and one Vitali-C monthly. They will be shipped to the dorm. This allows 2oz (shot glass) of BB and one V-C daily. Double that or more for a while till you feel better.
- Healing - at the first sign of illness ie. fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, sneezing, etc; add Tahebo and Silver - 1 dropper each every hour until you feel better. Get EXTRA SLEEP. I know some think that going out in the cold does not make you sick - and they are partly right. What makes you sick is getting chilled (you shiver, feel cold) when you body is already harboring a virus or bacterial infection. What happens is the resources/energy that were being used to fight the infection now have to go to warming the body - its a survival priority. So the bug gets a free pass and takes over. Your body's best offense is to create a fever to kill the bug. You can help by getting extra warm with clothes and blankets or a hot shower/bath. Stay warm. Use a hot water bottle and lots of blankets. Help your body to kill the bugs - don't try to cool the fever with n-saids unless you are fighting a headache or the fever is very high (104). Sweat it out! Drink lots of water to stay hydrated!!!
- Avoid sugar (save it for special treats) because your immune system is immediately impaired when sugar enters the bloodstream. Many artificial sweeteners have the same effect. So if you eat or drink something sugary when you have picked up a bug somewhere then you go out in the very cold weather, you have a recipe for disaster. Of course the precautions above will surely help.
- Rest - even a 10 or 15 minute break where you completely relax, eyes closed, and sink into a bed or chair will do wonders to recharge the immune system and help it catch up in the germ warfare. Do this a couple of times a day and you will be unstoppable.

Are you still drinking toxic Fluroide?

"Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland," reports Scientific American editors (January 2008). "Scientific attitudes toward fluoridation may be starting to shift," writes author Dan Fagin.
"Fluoride, the most consumed drug in the USA, is deliberately added to 2/3 of public water supplies theoretically to reduce tooth decay, but with no scientifically-valid evidence proving safety or effectiveness," says lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation.
Fagin, award-wining environmental reporter and Director of New York University's Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program, writes, "There is no universally accepted optimal level for daily intake of fluoride." Some researchers even wonder whether the 1 mg/L added into drinking water is too much, reports Fagin.
After 3 years of scrutinizing hundreds of studies, a National Research Council (NRC) committee "concluded that fluoride can subtly alter endocrine function, especially in the thyroid -- the gland that produces hormones regulating growth and metabolism," reports Fagin.
Fagin quotes John Doull, professor emeritus of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, who chaired the NRC committee thusly, "The thyroid changes do worry me."
Fluoride in foods, beverages, medicines and dental products can result in fluoride over-consumption, visible in young children as dental fluorosis -- white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted teeth. We can't normally see fluoride's effects to the rest of the body.
Reports Fagin, "a series of epidemiological studies in China have associated high fluoride exposures with lower IQ."
"(E)pidemiological studies and tests on lab animals suggest that high fluoride exposure increases the risk of bone fracture, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and diabetics," writes Fagin.
Fagin interviewed Steven Levy, director of the Iowa Fluoride Study which tracked about 700 Iowa children for sixteen years. Nine-year-old "Iowa children who lived in communities where the water was fluoridated were 50 percent more likely to have mild fluorosis... than [nine-year-old] children living in non-fluoridated areas of the state," writes Fagin. Levy will study fluoride's effects on their bones.

What's for Breakfast?
Does that question fill you with dread? Feelings of guilt? Overwhelm?
When I first started learning about 'real foods' and what the 'fake foods' were doing to me, it did feel overwhelming. The good old staples I'd relied on for years, wheat cereals, corn cereals, granola, I was learning did not really help my body. In fact, some of these foods were causing inflammation and even setting me up for serious disease like diabetes which runs in my family.
So how do you get past the overwhelm, the confusion, the question "what should I eat?"
It is a process and please know that even baby steps will make a difference. Actually making slow changes will probably work better because you will have time to adapt both physically and emotionally.
My job in working with you is to help you learn what you body really wants and needs. For example, a great breakfast for many people - especially those trying to lose weight - is my simple egg frittata with all natural bacon or turkey sausage. This gives your body the protein, carbs, essential fats and other nutrients it needs to carry you through a long morning without crashing. See the simple recipe below. Remember, I'm here to help and it's not a race - it's a process so relax, breathe and enjoy every bite.
Frittata for 2:
4 eggs scrambled with 1TBL Greek Yogurt or cream
1/3 cup sliced portabella mushrooms
1/2 cup frozen spinach ( I buy it in bags to use a little at a time)
2-3 sliced green onions
salt, pepper, other seasonings as desired
sprinkle of Parmesan cheese
2 tsp coconut or olive oil
Heat oil in oven proof skillet
Saute mushrooms and onions
Add spinach and seasonings, cover and simmer until spinach is thawed.
Add egg mixture and a pinch of salt/pepper
Cover again and cook on low until almost set.
Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and place under broiler until eggs are set and cheese is melted.
I like to serve this with a drizzle of hot sauce. It's also great with Guacamole, especially if you add fresh Cilantro to the eggs.
